What is an Algorithmic Penalty?

An automatic penalty applied to a site by Google. Unlike manual penalties, algorithmic penalties are automated and are sometimes not accompanied by a message in Webmaster Tools. As such, the reason for an algorithmic penalty can be harder to identify and subsequently to recover from.

It’s a penalty you get from a search engine like Google if they suspect your website has been misbehaving online.

This happens when a search engine like Google applies an automatic penalty to a website.

Unlike manual penalties, algorithmic penalties are automated and can sometimes happen without any warning.

Why is “Algorithmic Penalty” important to know?

When a search engine detects malpractice on your site, they will apply an automatic penalty to you. Unlike manual penalties which can happen without warning and are usually dealt with by the website owner themselves if it is not too serious of course there might be some kind person who rebuilds their ranking after getting hit hard but this isn’t likely going down well in most cases so best thing would probably just avoid having anything wrong at all when farming out these jobs!

It’s a bit like receiving a sanction from a search engine that you will not be getting traffic (clicks) from their search engine for the foreseeable future.

Scenario

“Getting hit by an algorithmic penalty can be the worst nightmare for any website owner of the business owner. It happened to one of my sites back in 2011 and I was completely devastated. I had worked years building a website which I loved and one day, all the traffic was gone. I had no idea what happened and on further inspection, I found that Google had just launched an algorithmic update to their search algorithm which is causing websites to lose search rankings.”
